Mountain Lion / Cougar Fur Pelt – North Idaho-Harvested Female
This well-preserved female Mountain Lion (Cougar) pelt, harvested from North Idaho, is a prime specimen for rugging, life-size mounting, or soft mounting projects. Professionally tanned and case skinned, the pelt measures an impressive 78 inches in total length, with a 51-inch nose-to-base-of-tail measurement. The fur quality is rated November prime, featuring a dense, sleek coat in a rich, darker brown coloration, ideal for display and high-end taxidermy applications.
In its tanned, non-stretched condition, the pelt measures approximately 15 inches across the center of the abdomen and has a 28-inch belly circumference just ahead of the hind hips, showcasing the cat’s healthy build and excellent preservation. All key anatomical features are intact, including feet with claws, turned ears, and split lips. Though slight damage to the claws on both front feet occurred during tanning, this is minor and can be easily corrected with light sanding.
This cougar pelt does exhibit a few minor defects, typical of wild-harvested animals. These include: a 1″ x 1/8″ scar mark on the top of the neck, likely from intraspecies conflict; a 3/4″ bullet hole in the left front shoulder, a larger 1.5″ diameter bullet hole just behind the same shoulder, a 3/4″ bullet hole on the right side of the abdomen, and a 1/2″ hole in the belly. Additionally, there are four knife slits (1.5″ or less) in the right rear leg, and two similar slits in the left rear hip—all of which are repairable with standard taxidermy techniques.
This pelt offers a strong combination of size, color, and completeness, making it a valuable choice for collectors or professionals seeking a versatile and visually appealing mountain lion hide. It was ethically sourced under regulated North Idaho game management practices, ensuring legal and sustainable harvest standards.
