Black bear fur for sale

Wolf, black bear, grizzly, and lynx fur pelts have long held a place in traditional clothing, indigenous cultures, and wilderness-inspired fashion. Each of these pelts brings unique qualities that make them valuable in distinct ways. Wolf pelts are known for their dense underfur and long guard hairs, often used in making warm winter garments such as parkas and hoods, particularly in Arctic and sub-Arctic regions. Their natural insulation and resistance to frost make them highly prized for both functional outerwear and decorative trims.

Black bear and grizzly bear pelts are heavier and coarser, often favored for rugs, wall hangings, or ceremonial purposes. While black bear fur is smoother and has a deep, glossy appearance, grizzly fur tends to be thicker with a more rugged, varied texture, often showcasing brown, blond, and silver tones. These pelts are typically used in rustic or lodge-style home décor or as traditional garments and regalia in cultural practices. Due to their size, bear pelts can be transformed into full-length coats, throws, or displays that symbolize strength and wilderness heritage.

Lynx pelts, on the other hand, are prized for their extreme softness, light coloration, and distinctive spotted patterns. The fur is luxurious and is often used in high-end fashion for coats, collars, and trim. Because of its fine texture and aesthetic appeal, lynx fur is also used in creating artisanal accessories such as hats, mittens, and boot liners. Despite being less bulky than bear or wolf fur, lynx fur offers considerable warmth and elegance, making it a favorite among furriers seeking premium quality.

Given the historical and cultural value of these furs, ethical sourcing is vital in today’s fur trade. Reputable suppliers ensure that all pelts come from regulated, sustainable, and legal sources, often working with wildlife management agencies or indigenous communities that follow traditional harvesting practices. Ethical sourcing emphasizes respect for wildlife populations, minimal waste, and humane methods. Customers today are increasingly conscious of where their materials come from, and as such, transparency, certification, and responsible practices are crucial in preserving both wildlife ecosystems and the cultural heritage tied to these natural materials.

How do you measure furs?

Hides come from real animals that were alive in nature. They are not made from flat fabric, but have the natural shape of the animal with curves and rolls around the neck, shoulders, hips, etc. Measuring the hide loosely or laying it flat on a table will not get the full length of the hide or give the same measurement every time, as shown in the first two pictures below.

We measure hides by pulling them tight by hand and measuring the length in a straight line, as in the third picture below. Line drawing to illustrate hide measurement

Some hides are measured as “total length” (from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail) and some are measured NTB (from the Nose To Base of the Tail, the length without the tail included). Beaver rounds are measured the traditional way, as length + width, pulled tight front to back and measured, then pulled tight left to right and measured and the two numbers added. The specific measurement is indicated with each item.

No. We don’t custom cut pieces out of our leather. If you don’t need a whole hide for your project, we do have smaller pieces available in most categories.

Although sometimes “buckskin” is used to refer specifically to deer leather, we use the terms interchangeably.

Raw furs have not been tanned. Tanning a fur preserves it for the long term, turning the skin into leather. A raw fur may be salted and/or dried, but may be slightly greasy and generally needs to be further preserved (tanned) to be used in most craft projects.
