WILSONVILLE, Ore. (KATU) — Wilsonville Police issued a safety reminder Tuesday after officers chased off a young black bear that was in the city likely “looking for an easy snack” from unsecured trash cans.
Several people called police on Monday night after seeing the bear moving through the city.

Officers caught up with the bear at about 10:40 p.m., leading it toward the Willamette River with the lights and sirens of their patrol cars.
While uncommon in the city, officials reminded everyone that wildlife sightings can happen anywhere – and it is important to give animals space. Wilsonville Police asks people not to call 9-1-1 unless there is an immediate safety threat.

“While Wilsonville is home to restaurant called Black Bear Diner, actual black bears are not commonly seen in the city,” said Wilsonville Police. “This bear was likely checking the area for an easy snack, including unsecured trash or other food sources.”
To make sure bears don’t stick around the populated area, wildlife officials say it is important not to feed it. That means limiting food access by doing things like securing garbage cans, cleaning barbecues, feeding your pets indoors, and getting rid of fruit under trees.
Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife officials say the best thing people can do is stay away from bears, and do their best to keep them from becoming habituated with people.
