Mountain Lion Pelt – North Idaho-Harvested Tom

This large tom Mountain Lion pelt, harvested in North Idaho, is a solid example of a mature male with excellent size and structure. Open skinned and professionally tanned, the pelt measures an impressive 86 inches in total length, with a 57-inch nose-to-base-of-tail measurement. Taken in November, the pelt displays medium brown coloration with dense, seasonally appropriate fur—making it well-suited for rug work or life-size taxidermy.

In its tanned, non-stretched state, the hide measures approximately 20 inches across the center of the abdomen and 33 inches across the belly just ahead of the hind hips, reflecting the strength and stature of this tom. All key anatomical features are intact and professionally prepared, including feet with claws, turned ears, and split lips. The claws on the front feet have sustained very minor tannery wear but require only light sanding to restore their natural appearance.

The pelt does include some cosmetic and structural imperfections, typical of a wild-harvested specimen. These include seven small holes (<1/4″ diameter), primarily located on the back, and a 1/2″ bare spot on the top of the neck, which is naturally concealed by surrounding fur. A 1″ x 1/8″ scar is present on the back near the base of the neck. On the lower portion, there is a 4″ x 2″ hole on the right side of the belly near the rear flank, and a 2″ hole in the right rear leg skin where the IDFG tag is attached. Additionally, a 1″ x 1″ patch of fur has been chewed short by hounds, a common occurrence in lion hunts.

Despite these minor defects, this cougar pelt remains a strong, display-worthy piece, offering excellent size and anatomical completeness. It is an ideal candidate for rugging or life-size mounting, especially for clients or collectors seeking a larger tom hide with natural field character. Ethically sourced under Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) regulations, this pelt represents a fine example of responsibly harvested North American wildlife.
