Anyone with a flair for the macabre would do well to make haste to the Vancouver Convention Centre this weekend.
Running across both Saturday and Sunday, the Oddities & Curiosities Expo brings the world's largest travelling oddities event to town, showcasing hand-selected vendors, dealers, artists and small businesses devoted to all things weird.
Attendees will find attractions and items running the gamut of grim and grisly: taxidermy, preserved specimens, original artwork, horror/Halloween inspired pieces, antiques, handcrafted oddities, quack medical devices, creepy clothing, odd jewelry, skulls, bones and funeral collectibles.
And for those with truly unique itches that need to be scratched, ticketed workshops will include a day-long taxidermy class, an insect pinning class and a wet specimen preservation workshop.
Those entomology and taxidermy classes lead participants through the particulars on mounting, preparing and grooming raccoons, scorpions and even octopuses. The ticketed workshops range in price between $210 and $457.
Event organizers note that all animals in the taxidermy class and other parts of the show are sourced ethically and died of natural causes.
The workshops will be hosted by The Sleeping Sirens taxidermy team, and built-in breaks for lunch and exploring the expo will be in the offing.
When: Oct. 10 and 11, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: Vancouver Convention Centre – 1055 Canada Place
Cost: Tickets start at $22.11 and kids 12 and under get in free
