A Northwest Colorado taxidermist took another set of ribbons for his work in recent weeks.
Scott Moore, of Mountain Man Taxidermy, attended the Colorado Taxidermist Association’s annual state taxidermy championships held May 30 to June 1 in New Castle.
The competition included industry professionals from Colorado and Utah showing the results of their talents, as well as seminars on new products and practices.
Moore entered a customer piece, a Himalayan tahr, and his own personal piece, a red stag from a 2016 trip to New Zealand into the contest.
Moore entered the Masters level, earning a first-place ribbon in the large life-size category with his stag and a second-place ribbon in the game-head division with the tahr.
Each piece received a score, along with a judge’s critique of the mount outlining areas that the taxidermist could improve upon.
Earlier this year, Moore attended the Utah Taxidermist Association’s Best of the West Championships held in mid-March in Salt Lake City, placing second in the master’s game head division with the tahr and second in master’s on the stag.
He also earned first place in the commercial division with an elk shoulder mount, and first in the commercial division on a life-size mountain lion, as well as the Artisan Award, which is Taxidermist Choice Best of Show, as voted on by peers.
Moore said he also traveled on safari to Africa in early May and is already making plans on how to compete with one of his personal pieces, possibly at the World Show.
