Warren event highlights debate over wolfdog hybrid legislation – WFMJ

Sit Happens Dog Training in Warren held a “Save the Wolf Dog” event on Sunday to bring awareness to the breed while fighting against proposed legislation that could negatively impact ownership, according to organizers.
The wolfdog hybrid is a dog that has ancestry in domestic dogs and wolves. While they could appear dangerous, Sit Happens Dog Training Co-Owner Kathy Compston says they are just like any other dog.
“There is a wildness to them, there is that ‘call of the wild,’ but it doesn’t mean that they can’t be domesticated, it doesn’t mean that they can’t be a part of your family,” Compston said.
In December 2024, hundreds of animals, including wolfdog hybrids, were found neglected at a “fur and urine farm” in Ashtabula County.
House Bill 676 was introduced shortly after as a targeted response to the incident.
The bill, introduced by State Representatives David Thomas (R–Jefferson) and Rodney Creech (R–West Alexandria), would “establish statewide registration and safety standards for wolfdog hybrids,” according to a news release from the Ohio House of Representatives website.
The bill, if passed, states that wolfdog hybrid owners would need to obtain liability insurance that equals or exceeds $100,000.
In the release, Representative Thomas stated, “Had we passed this bill five years ago this horrible crisis would not have happened in Ashtabula County because it would have allowed easier access to the property and alerted the proper authorities earlier.”
While the bill may appear to be working to establish a safer way for wolfdog hybrids to live as pets, Compton believes it would do more harm than good.
“They’re trying to increase licenses you have on the hybrid wolfdog, they’re trying to increase the insurance, and the fact that you have to keep them contained at all times,” Compston said. “If you don’t, they will come take your dog, and they will put it down.”
House Bill 676 is still in the early stages of legislation.
