Colorado Parks and Wildlife moves forward with proposed fur sales ban – KKCO 11 News

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) — The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission voted 6-4 on Wednesday to move forward with a petition that would ban the commercial sale of fur in Colorado.
The petition was initially proposed in June 2025 by the Center for Biological Diversity, a nonprofit organization that advocates for the protection of endangered animals.
The petition aims to give furbearers — species such as foxes, bobcats and coyotes — protections similar to those already in place for game animals like elk and deer.
After a two-day meeting in Denver, commissioners voted to accept the petition, officially moving it into the rulemaking phase — the formal process where state officials draft potential regulations and collect public feedback before making a final decision.
The proposal has drawn both praise and ire. Supporters say the measure would better protect furbearing animals, while opponents argue it could undermine wildlife management practices.
If enacted, the ban would apply only to the commercial sale of pelts, not to trapping itself.
