QUICKSPIN: A Review Of Remi Wolf's Mud – The Concordian

The cover of Remi Wolf’s third album features the singer covered in mud. The true mud, however, is made up of the grime associated with shame and heartbreak.
The opening track is titled “Bottle.” Immediately, addiction and substances come to the front of the listener’s mind. As Wolf croons in the chorus: “Can’t get the bottle if I don’t get up. I can’t get drunk if I don’t got drugs.”
Her lyrics display a balance between determination and hopelessness. Wolf appears determined to crawl through the mud caked onto her skin, albeit not in the healthiest of ways.
On “Champagne,” Wolf self-deprecates atop playful guitar strings, likening herself to cheap champagne. She is ready to sink herself deeper into despair. On “Burn Me Blue,” she decries her habits with lyrics like, “It’s sick how I twist my world around you.”
Every track on Mud contains rock- and country-influenced strings and hollow drums that sound like the backdrop of a night out at a dive bar. Wolf’s heavy references to alcohol and drunkenness on the record make this instrumentation perfectly suited for her subject matter.
On most tracks on the record, the singer communicates the slump that she finds herself in, but none as profoundly as she does on “Guess.” Its soft ballad laments a past relationship as Wolf compares herself to her lost lover’s parents.
“Yeah, I was supposed to cling onto every word you say but I’m nothing like your mother,” she sings.
Mud is a triumph for Remi Wolf. The record effortlessly portrays substance abuse, emotional baggage and heartbreak, tribulations that deal with the mud after the heaviest downpours of life.
