U.S. Army Accepts First XM30 Wolf for Sixth Historic Bradley-Replacement Bid – sofx.com

Retired Army Brigadier General Geoffrey Norman, now director of U.S. strategy and growth at General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS), disclosed the handover in an August 28 social media post. He said the Wolf arrived on schedule and that additional prototypes would follow.

The delivery matters less for what it is than for what it ends. The XM30 is the sixth Army program since the 1980s built to replace the Bradley, and every prior effort, from Future Combat Systems to the Ground Combat Vehicle, collapsed under cost, complexity, or shifting requirements before a single vehicle reached a unit. The Bradley, first fielded in 1981, is widely assessed to have reached the limit of its capacity to absorb new armor, electronics, and defensive systems.
GDLS is betting that a change in how the vehicle was built will change that record. The XM30 is the first Army ground combat vehicle designed entirely with digital engineering tools, and Norman described the Wolf as a born-digital design meant to take new software and hardware through a Modular Open Systems Architecture rather than a physical redesign. The claim is untested in the field, which is what the coming trials are for.
The Wolf carries a two-person crew and six infantry troops. It mounts an unmanned turret armed with the Northrop Grumman XM913 50mm cannon, a larger weapon than the Bradley’s 25mm gun, intended to defeat enemy fighting vehicles and fortified positions. The design adds anti-tank guided missiles, hybrid-electric drive, and an active protection system, the hardware that intercepts incoming rounds before they strike.

The single vehicle at Aberdeen will undergo government checks. GDLS plans to send seven more to Fort Hood, Texas, around October, where the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, known as the Iron Horse Brigade, will run operational evaluations. Under the 2023 contracts, valued together at about $1.6 billion, each competitor must build between seven and 11 prototypes.
GDLS is not competing alone. American Rheinmetall Vehicles fields a rival XM30 derived from its Lynx KF41, and the two teams draw in most of the U.S. combat-vehicle industrial base. Rheinmetall’s Team Lynx includes Textron Systems, RTX, L3Harris, Allison Transmission, and Anduril. GDLS partners with GM Defense, Applied Intuition, AeroVironment, and General Dynamics Mission Systems.
The decision point is the exercise, not the delivery. Both designs are scheduled to run through a National Training Center rotation with the Iron Horse Brigade, and an Army official told Breaking Defense the service could select a winner in late spring 2027. Low-rate production would follow, with fielding targeted for the end of the decade.
That timeline assumes the evaluations produce a clear result. Five previous attempts did not get this far.
