Jason Travis said he finds joy in preserving the memories of people’s outdoor adventures.
To further pursue his passion, the Zion Grove man will be opening his own taxidermy shop.
“I have always enjoyed the art of taxidermy. I enjoy creating pieces of art that people can be proud to display in their homes,” Travis said.
If all goes as planned, his shop, Untamed Artistry, will open by the end of fall or early winter at 1352 St. Johns Road in Drums.
Travis designed the shop and is having it built specifically for taxidermy.
“This will be a brand new taxidermy shop. It will have a small showroom and a work area,” he explained.
While the shop is new, Travis isn’t new to the art.
“I have spent the last 20 years helping in other shops while working a full time job,” he said.
When he was just starting, he apprenticed at a taxidermy shop in the Poconos.
“Taxidermy is a passion and with the support of friends and family I have decided to make it a full-time career,” he explained.
Travis grew up in a family of outdoorsmen, all of whom he said value nature and its gifts.
“I enjoy the challenge of creating artwork that celebrates the beauty of nature,” he explained.
Once he opens up the shop, he will be able to preserve an animal’s body through mounting or “stuffing.” Some clients display the animals while some use them for studies.
Through his years of experience, he’s found that the most common animal people want preserved is the white-tail deer.
But Travis isn’t limited to deer.
“I work with animals commonly found in the United States, exotic animals, and animals found around the world,” he noted.
He also works with fish species, doing both skin mounts and replicas.
Animals can be as small as a squirrel to as big as an elk, Travis said.
“I create displays ranging in size from panel mounts to life-size mounts,” he said.
