Owner Names Kitten After Wolf—No One Prepared for What She Grows Up To Do – Newsweek

Animal lovers have been left fascinated by a cat who howls like a wolf—and has the name to prove it.
TikTok user @misfitmeowz, who describes herself as a “cat mom” and is involved in animal rescue, has gone viral after showing off her cat, Wolfie, who she has had since she was a tiny kitten.
Wolfie’s owner, who goes by Bunny Bones online, told Newsweek that Wolfie “had such a rough beginning at life, she really beat all the odds being here today,” and described her as “a very small cat, with the biggest personality.”
“I named her Wolfie because of her coat, and she always had a tiny but mighty sense about her. She’s always [had] the leader of the pack-type mentality!” she said.
Now a video, posted on February 22, shows Wolfie sitting on a box, watching something off camera. And, as she opens her mouth, she doesn’t let out a regular meow—instead, she lets out a long, mournful howl, even tilting her head upwards like a wolf howling at the moon.
The gray-colored tabby cat may have been named for her fur, which isn’t unlike the coat of a gray wolf, but it’s safe to say that name has proven prophetic.
As her owner explained in the caption to a video shared on February 22: “I’ve had her since she was tiny, tiny. I had no idea when I named her Wolfie that she would grow up to do this!”
Wolfie’s owner asked in words over the video: “Have you ever heard a cat howl like a wolf?”
TikTok users were fascinated, watching the video more than half a million times, as one user joked: “It’s 2026. Guess cats can be dogs now. Not sure how that works but he seems happy.”
Another agreed: “Excuse me, I think that’s a Werecat,” and another described the pet: “Oh he is a Big Wolfie.”
“What type of dog is that?” another asked, and one took the opportunity for a pun: “Wolfgang Amadeus Meowzart.”
One was so taken aback that she asked Wolfie’s owner: “This is so cute is it AI?”—but the owner responded, confirming: “Not AI, this is 150 percent just how my cat Wolfie is. She’s a whole character!”
Bones told Newsweek that she’s happy to see Wolfie’s video do so well, as she set up the TikTok account “to bring a lot of attention to cat fostering, and what great little animals they are. All of mine are rescues from my area.”
There is plenty of evidence on the internet of cats appearing to bark, or even doing dog-like behaviors such as playing fetch—though Wolfie’s howling is particularly impressive.
Veterinary surgeon Nick Horniman previously told Newsweek that it is “not unusual to observe a cat mimicking doglike behaviors,” and are “often shaped by environmental factors and social learning.”
“Cats are observant animals, and if they see a dog receiving positive reinforcement like attention or treats for certain actions, they may try those behaviors themselves.”
